Making it Count in 2024!

Welcome to the Central Unified community—the new school year is upon us! Over the past few years, our staff has worked hard to bring Central Unified to the next level. Our focus has been improving academic outcomes for students, increasing and improving safety and facilities, and investing in our community in ways that connect us all. I am proud of our progress and recognize that with each day, we continue to identify and work towards being better.

Some celebrations from the last few years include:

  • Academic performance continues to rise at a steady rate districtwide. We are seeing incredible growth for students who have been enrolled in Central schools over time.
  • Graduation rates are higher than pre-pandemic, and we have increased significantly the number of students with IEPs who are on track for a diploma.
  • For the past two years, approximately 18% of current English Learners have been reclassified as English proficient. Many of these students go on to earn the California State Seal of Biliteracy before they graduate.
  • Security upgrades around the district have included adding or improving fencing at all schools, upgrading and adding additional cameras around schools and facilities, and implementing an emergency response system to alert all staff of procedures for maintaining safety and security in any type of emergency.

We are the hub within a diverse and beautiful community and believe that partnerships with parents and community organizations are critical to preparing students for a successful future. Our small and mighty team of interpreters and outreach liaisons grew in the 2023-4 school year. Every school now has a family outreach liaison ready to assist and connect parents who speak other languages (Spanish, Punjabi, and Hmong) to the resources needed for their child(ren). Central was just awarded over 8 million dollars in funds to develop community schools at six elementary schools. This will bring important resources our students and families need to the school. Partnering with our Foundation for Central Schools, we have opened clothing closets and a food pantry that serves any family in need.

We invite you to visit our schools and see the progress made thanks to our community’s investments and our Board's decision to use state and federal funding. We’ve increased green spaces at numerous schools and are pushing towards completion of the Justin Garza High School, the districtwide sports complex, and a new elementary school that will open in 2025-26. We want you to feel welcome and proud of your child’s school and are committed to continuing our efforts toward improved academics, safe and clean schools, and community engagement. Every step we take counts, and every step we take together counts double.

Take good care!
